18th August - by Mwezzi |
I hadn't had the best day ever, so when I walked into Barrowlands 2 on Friday I needed a bit of a pick-me-up. The Fusiliers, first act of the night, did the job nicely. They were lively, they sounded good, they were a sign that all is not wrong in the Indie sector. Had I not failed as a Glaswegian and gotten lost on my way to the venue, I'd be able to say a lot more about them, but alas they were off almost immediately.

Castle Donington is a large village almost considered a town which features such attractions as a medieval market on a Monday, demolished power station, world famous race circuit and the Download festival. It’s also home to the four piece electronica outfit Late of the Pier.

As a Mel Brooks fan I was pretty damn excited to hear that his 60's sitcom, Get Smart, was being turned into a movie. In my opinion it is the foundation upon which Police Squad/Naked Gun was based.

5 Replies | 145 Views | My Bloody Valentine - Glasgow Barrowlands - 3rd July
8th July - by Posh |
Thursday night, and I am having a drink with friends. Friends who saw My Bloody Valentine last night. Tales are told of post-gig telephone calls terminated after it becomes apparent neither side can hear anything for the tinnitus now ravaging all ears exposed to this unholy noise. I am told the venue are handing out ear plugs to patrons. There is a reprise of their famed noise improv on ‘You Made Me Realise’ that ‘is like a jet plane taking off’. It’s the same story I’ve been hearing all day from the multitude of friends who attended the first night. ‘I lasted three songs before I had to use the earplugs’, says one.

Most promoters avoid putting on gigs in the summer months. Look at the listings for any of the big venues and the number of acts that are playing (and the quality of the acts) drops dramatically. This is, of course, because of the festivals. Everyone saves up to go to T in the Park or to one of the Carling Festivals, or even Glastonbury. With that in mind, I really shouldn’t be surprised that there was a small turn out to see Look See Proof, but I am. Their debut album (which was released on the 1st July) is a decent enough record. It’s not going to win any awards, or break any music boundaries. It hasn’t changed the way I see music, but it’s not an entirely unpleasant experience. They’re very now. They sound a bit like a lot of successful bands, which is usually a good way to build up a fan base. I expected a good show, with a good crowd, and I guess I should be happy with 1 out of the two.

If I didn’t know any better, I might be tempted to say that The Happening, with its laughable dialogue, clumsy performances and ludicrous plot, is actually a subtly disguised subversive comedy. The problem is, I don’t know any better. Perhaps M. Night Shyamalan has managed to fool the masses with a clever and crafty spoof of his previous body of work, with such convincing deadpan delivery as to leave even the likes of Larry David scratching their glossy bald craniums in befuddlement.

5th July - by ¡Punk! |
The single most quoted film ever is surely the Life of Brian. For every "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" and "I coulda been a contender" that gets flung out there's a multitude of quotes from Python's masterpiece which we all know and love. I'd argue it's possible to say a random joke from this film to a person you've just met in the pub and have them say the following line. It's part of our national psyche. If you were too young to watch it first time round no doubt your dad, older brother, uncle or whoever informed you of it's genius and passed it onto you. In that way it has a lot in common with the other banned films I've spoke of. They were hard to get a hold of and it got passed down to you. This was never hard to get a hold of but it's just as much a part of growing up to a lot of people as being taken to your first football game, getting handed your first drink or the first time you're asked to be the first footer after the bells. That day when someone older than you, who had taken you under their wing in order to mould you into something resembling a decent human being realised you were old enough and wise enough to "get" the humour in this film. It's a treasure, a symbol of all that is good within comedy and cinema at large, and as important to us all as most films we will ever see.

1st July - by Mwezzi |
Since being declared one-hit wonders with their single Creep in 1992, Radiohead has proven to be anything but, rising to become one of the biggest British rock bands around and releasing several Grammy-winning albums. The band has spanned genres, from lightweight pop-rock and simple riffs to complex guitar-driven anthems, jazz-influenced songs and bizarre electronic dance-trance melodies. This experimentation is fuelled by the highly creative natures of the members; lead singer Thom Yorke released his solo electronic album ‘The Eraser’ in 2006 whilst Johnny Greenwood is a resident composer for the BBC and, in addition to being the band’s lead guitarist, can also play several other instruments including the viola and organ. His brother Colin Greenwood mans the bass and synthesizers, and the remaining two members are Ed O’Brien on guitar and backing vocals and Phil Selway dealing with percussion. Their newest album ‘In Rainbows’ hit no. 1 in both the UK and US charts and has been a roaring success with both fans and critics.

8 Replies | 437 Views | New York Dolls - Glasgow Garage, June 29th
1st July - by Posh |
By all rights, I really shouldn’t be here. The New York Dolls without Johnny Thunders (or Arthur ‘Killer’ Kane or Jerry Nolan for that matter - all three are deceased) should be as big a turn-off to the purist in me as the likes of Queen without Freddie Mercury. It’s an act of musical heresy akin to the Rolling Stones without Keith Richards. And I’ve already satisfied my curiousity as to the worth of this line-up once, when I caught the 21st century New York Dolls at Leeds festival a few years ago, playing to a depressingly uninterested outdoor crowd in the afternoon mere weeks after Arthur Kane's death. Hearing the Dolls stellar 70's songbook (the holy text of rock and roll from an alternate universe where sleaze rock reigns supreme) live was great fun, sure, but all far too polite and neutered to ever convince that this was really the Dolls.

26th June - by Posh |
Not an easy band to sell to prospective new listeners, are Stone Gods. Such are the fickle vagaries of fashion and taste that the phrase 'featuring ex-members of The Darkness' is probably far more likely to elicit laughter than excite interest these days. The band themselves seem to be aware of this, and have continually stressed the fundamental differences between their old outfit and this one. For one, no Justin Hawkins, and with him goes the inimitable screech and camp sensibilities that first gained that band attention yet probably most doomed them to novelty status.
